I love the idea of leveraging the emotional energy of joy Melissa. The win I am celebrating this week: Having successfully managed 2 weeks of at home learning with the kids while being a student myself. Our success looks like a) happy kids b) all school work has been completed c) happy mom d) clean(-ish) house. Not all of these things happen…[Read more]

Thank you for your thoughtful post Nancy!
I actually feel a sense of freedom around the idea of providing a set allowance ‘no strings attached’ – it takes the load off of me to double check that the chores are being done- calculate the difference, micro-manage….yuck. That is not the kind of parent I want to be, it’s not what I want to spend my…[Read more]-
I totally agree Breanne with keeping money separate from chores and contribution to the family and home. We did that with our son and it really helped keep the focus on how do we be a family and have a great life together. Money management was a completely separate thing which I wish we had done even more with, in terms of being financially…[Read more]

wow yes @Lynnn, I had a bit of a staggering moment reading what you wrote here on keeping money separate from contribution to the family & home – tying those together suddenly feels… almost dangerous. I had a very close friend growing up whose father leaned on him for farm work & chores more than they would a hired hand & there was an…[Read more]

Awesome, we are learning together and every generation can go further as we understand more. I never realized how financially illiterate I was until I read Rich Dad Poor Dad, Richard Kioyosaki. Just because I earned a pay cheque, had a chequing account and paid my bills didn’t mean I understood money. Very enlightening. He also has a game for kids…[Read more]

I have read Rich Dad Poor Dad years ago – he is quite a story teller recounting how he tried to ‘make’ money. lol. I will have to look into the kids game @lynn this is the first I’ve heard of it!

Wow – yes Nancy! “It doesn’t make sense for parents to grant additional freedom until your child demonstrates that he/she can manage his/her present level of freedom.” THIS. This is going to be a game changer in conversations with Hunter & Julia. Thank you for these tools Nancy! There is no blame here, we can still have a close relationship and…[Read more]
